NDC Launches Grassroots Youth Mobilisation on Democracy in Sokoto

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Sokoto State has launched a grassroots awareness campaign targeting youths to promote genuine democratic participation and national development.

The party’s governorship aspirant, Shamsudeen Aliyu, unveiled the initiative on Sunday in Sokoto, stating that it aims to educate Nigerians—particularly young people—on the availability of viable political alternatives beyond the dominant parties.

Aliyu said the campaign seeks to position youths as advocates of good governance while mobilising support for the NDC.

“We have long operated in a system where people believe there are only two options — the ruling party or the opposition. But Nigeria has over 50 registered political parties, and citizens deserve real choices,” he said.

The aspirant acknowledged that his group previously aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) but defended his decision to defect, noting that political alignment should reflect ideological compatibility.

“Politics is about choice. When your ideology no longer aligns with a party’s direction, you have the right to move. Many politicians in Nigeria have done the same,” he added.

Aliyu attributed his defection to concerns over leadership, emphasising that the NDC better reflects his vision for inclusive governance and citizen participation.

He said the campaign would prioritise youth empowerment and cautioned against the use of young people as political tools during elections.

“Our message is simple: be liberated. Do not allow yourselves to be used as political hooligans. Your vote is your power—use it to elect leaders who truly represent you,” he said.

According to him, the mobilisation drive will extend across local government areas, engaging youth groups and community-based organisations.

Aliyu added that the NDC would intensify efforts to establish itself as a credible alternative ahead of future elections.

He expressed optimism that increased political awareness and youth demand for accountability could reshape the state’s political landscape.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event attracted politicians, youth groups and grassroots mobilisers from across the state.
